With Or Without You !

See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you

Sleight of hand and twist of fate
On a bed of nails she makes me wait
And I wait without you

With or without you

Through the storm we reach the shore
You give it all but I want more
And I'm waiting for you

I can't live
With or without you

And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give yourself away

My hands are tied
My body bruised, she's got me with
Nothing to win and
Nothing left to lose

And you give yourself away
And you give
And you give yourself away

With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

With or without you
I can't live
With or without you

Management

A man flying in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. Reducing altitude, he spotted a man on the ground and descended to shouting range.

"Excuse me," he shouted. "Can you help me? I promised my friend I would meet him a half hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man below responded: "Yes. You are in a hot air balloon, hovering approximately 30 feet above this field. You are between 40 and 42 degrees North Latitude, and between 58 and 60 degrees West Longitude."

"You must be an engineer," responded the balloonist.

"I am," the man replied. "How did you know?"

"Well," said the balloonist, "everything you have told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost."

Whereupon the man on the ground responded, "You must be a manager."

"That I am" replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are, or where you're going. You have made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you are in the exact same position you were before we met, but now it is somehow my fault."

A Prayer for the Stressed

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
the courage to change the things I cannot accept,
and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had
to kill today because they got on my nerves.

And also, help me to be careful of the toes I step on
today as they may be connected to the feet I may have
to kiss tomorrow.

Help me to always give 100% at work....
12% on Monday
23% on Tuesday
40% on Wednesday
2O% on Thursday
5% on Fridays

And help me to remember...
When I'm having a really bad day,
and it seems that people are trying to wind me up,
that it takes 42 muscles to frown, 28 to smile and
only 4 to extend my arm and smack someone in the mouth!

Wen Jiabao urges Pakistan to protect Chinese nationals

BEIJING: China has asked Pakistan to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in the country after the killing of one hostage during an operation in South Waziristan the other day.

In a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz late Thursday, Premier Wen Jiabao asked the Pakistani government to adopt "effective" measures to guarantee the safety of Chinese nationals, the People’s Daily newspaper said.

"The Chinese government strongly condemns this terrorist act involving the kidnapping of Chinese citizens. We hope both sides can cooperate closely to properly handle the aftermath," Wen told Aziz, according to the report.

"The Pakistani government took action under very difficult circumstances," Aziz was quoted saying.Meanwhile, a Chinese government team leaves for Pakistan on Friday to investigate the kidnap and ill-fated rescue of two Chinese engineers.

One of the engineers held hostage by al Qaeda-linked militants was killed on Thursday and his colleague rescued in a commando assault that killed their five kidnappers. "The team will convey the condolences from the leadership of the Communist Party of China and from the State Council to the victims and Chinese personnel in Pakistan," Xinhua news agency quoted a Foreign Ministry source as saying.

The spokesman said the captors had released the Pakistani driver and the police guard early Thursday morning while all the efforts of Jirga and the local people for the safe release of Chinese had failed.

Greenspan says oil price agony milder than in 1970s

WASHINGTON: Soaring oil prices should inflict less damage on US economic growth and inflation than the 1970s oil shock, Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan said on Friday. But the harm could intensify if oil prices moved "materially higher," he warned.

"The impact of the current surge in oil prices, though noticeable, is likely to prove less consequential to economic growth and inflation than in the 1970s," Greenspan said.

Oil prices now were only three-fifths of the peak in February 1981 after accounting for inflation, and the rise in imported oil prices amounted to about 0.75 per cent of economic output, he said.

"The effects were far larger in the crises of the 1970s," Greenspan said in a prepared speech here to the National Italian American Foundation. "But, obviously, the risk of more serious negative consequences would intensify if oil prices were to move materially higher," he said.

New York’s main crude oil contract has soared nearly 70 per cent this year, spiking Friday at a record $55. Adjusted for inflation, however, prices are far below the levels reached in the wake of the 1979 Iranian revolution when they surged to upwards of $80 a barrel in today’s money.

Greenspan said the price surge was likely to squeeze industries most heavily dependent on oil, speeding up a transition to more fuel-efficient practices or alternative energy sources. "Improving technology is already reducing the energy intensity of industrial countries," he said.

"Presumably, recent oil price increases will accelerate the displacement of energy-intensive production facilities," he added. Oil would eventually be overtaken by cheaper alternatives well before conventional reserves ran out, Greenspan predicted.

In the past, oil had displaced coal despite vast untapped coal reserves and coal had displaced wood without denuding forests, he said.

Uncertainties about supply, fed by political tensions, particularly in the Middle East, had pressed oil prices higher, Greenspan said.

Supply concerns led the oil industry to seek to build up larger inventories, pushing up demand and straining production. "Adding to the difficulties is the rising consumption of oil, especially in China and India, both of which are expanding economically in ways that are relatively energy intensive," he said.

"Even the recent notable pickup in OPEC output, by exhausting most of its remaining excess capacity, has only modestly satisfied overall demand."

The Federal Reserve boss said he expected that "part of the recent rise in spot prices is expected to wash out over the longer run."

Greenspan said the United States would likely start switching to the next major sources of energy in mid-century, when conventional oil reservoirs were expected to start declining. "In fact, the development and application of new sources of energy, especially non-conventional oil, is already in train.

Nonetheless, it will take time," Greenspan said.

"We, and the rest of the world, doubtless will have to live with the uncertainties of the oil markets for some time to come." Last month, Greenspan blamed the steep increase in energy prices for dragging the American economy into a "soft patch" in late spring after strong growth in late 2003 and early 2004.

Market watch {oct 16,2004}

The market continued its upward movement despite some irritating news. The index managed to close above 5,400 level. The upward move was led by companies belonging to oil and gas sector. According to some analysts the reason for focus on this sector was the forthcoming results in general and higher dividend expectation from state-owned enterprises. In the forthcoming week, investors' attention is expected to remain focused on this sector. However, there seems to be two factors having the potential to adversely impact market sentiments. These are: rising interest rates and the increase in POL prices, which the government has been resisting some quite some time. Since crude oil prices are not expected to come down, sooner or later the government has to make this unpopular decision.

PAKISTAN OILFIELDS

The company is expected to announce its first quarter results on October 18th, 2004. Elixir Securities Pakistan has projected a net profits forecast of Rs 657 million that translates into an EPS of five rupees. A decline of 8.4% in company's earnings is due to (I) decline in overall prediction (II) non-cash entry of amortization of decomposition cost for POL fields, and (II) "normalized" exploration cost in the quarter. Despite a decline in its overall production, POL is expected to witness a growth of 7.7% in its top-line due to a 37.2% increase in international oil prices. Implementation of IAS-37 is likely to increase POL's amortization cost where it has to make provisions for the decomposition cost of its producing fields. This is likely to be added in its operating cost that will increase by about 16.2%. Although, this will affect the bottom line, it will not affect its cash flows. Some of the exploratory projects were delayed in first quarter of last year due to concerns regarding seismic survey of few fields. This was the major reason for exceptionally low exploration costs in for that period. Consequently, exploration cost during 1QFY05 is significantly higher.

PAKISTAN TELECOMMUNICATION

Pakistan's telecom sector is likely to grow at a 19% over the next five years. The teledensity is likely to reach 16%. The growth will come mainly from the cellular segment, (6% fixed line penetration and 9.9% cellular penetration) by 2009. These numbers are fairly attractive and seem promising for new entrants. However, it is believed that only those players with well defined marketing plans and financial muscle would be able to survive. The days of extra-ordinary profit margins in the telecom sector have come to an end, where earnings would be driven by volumes rather than a function of high priced services. This can bring PTCL earnings under pressure. However, some analysts expect the company to witness growth on the basis of (I) aggressive expansions (II) increase in interconnectivity (III) corporate restructuring, which will result in bringing operating efficiencies and cushion falling margins and (IV) growth in cellular operations.

PICIC

Pakistan Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation (PICIC) in its notice to the stock exchange has disclosed in principal the approval of the merger of PICIC Commercial Bank (PCBL) and PICIC, by PICIC's Board of Directors. The merger is subject to the terms and conditions to be finalized between PCBL and PICIC, approval of State Bank of Pakistan and Shareholders of both the companies. Neither the structure of the merger nor the terms of the merger (including the swap ratio) have been agreed upon at present. PICIC owns 60% stake in PCBL.

UNILEVER PAKISTAN

The Board of Directors meeting has been scheduled for 19th October for the review of third quarter ended 30th September 2004. The company is expected to post earnings of Rs 790 million that translates into an EPS of Rs 59.46. This includes one time gain arising from sale of its Dalda unit yielding Rs 550 million. This would bring the nine month earnings to Rs 1,434 million (EPS: PKR108). During the third quarter analysts expect earnings of the tea and personal health care segments to improve due to a) higher tea prices and tariff rationalization on tea imports and b) successful launch of new variants in the food and personal health care segment.

ICI PAKISTAN

At this juncture it may be necessary to revisit the company. The reasons for this are: (I) early repayment of debt is likely to save Rs 140 million financial charges on recurring basis and (II) de-bottlenecking in Polyester and Soda Ash segments. Segment wise performance review shows that during first half of 2004 operating profits of the company declined by 16% due to employee restructuring cost and lackluster performance of its major segments. Going forward, polyester and the soda ash segments are expected to remain under pressure with paints remaining profit-making segment. The company is expected to post earnings of Rs 700 million with an EPS of above five rupees.

Will Google say hello to IM?

Published: October 15, 2004, 2:42 PM PDT
By Stefanie Olsen
Staff Writer, CNET News.com

Google watchers abuzz about the search darling's new desktop tool are already betting on its next product: instant chat.

Such speculation isn't new, but it's gained legs as some intriguing facts have come to light this week. First, although few people seem to realize it, Google already owns an instant-messaging (IM) client called Hello that it picked up this summer with its acquisition of photo-sharing service Picasa.

Meanwhile, code uncovered in the Google Desktop Search tool released Tuesday suggests that the company may have broader plans to integrate IM into its growing list of products.

Richard Smith, a well-known security consultant, said he examined the code in the desktop application and found included in the program files a new protocol: "google_im://". (A protocol allows desktop software to interact with the Web browser.) "This is a good sign there's an IM client," he said.

A Google representative said the protocol flagged by Smith does not hint at a pending Google IM product; rather, it is merely a component used to capture IM data from America Online Instant Messenger and make it searchable on the desktop.

Smith also unearthed some of the history behind the desktop search application, the most ambitious new product launch for Google since its $1.7 billion initial public offering earlier this year. For example, before it was named Google Desktop Search, the software was code-named Total Recall, according to a file name detected in the software by Smith. Google confirmed the handle and said the project had also previously taken the code name "Fluffy Bunny."

Right or wrong, the guesswork is a seemingly irresistible sport among technology buffs and investors, driving endless speculation about Google's next steps and perpetuating a Wonka-like mystique about the company. Mountain View, Calif.-based Google, founded in 1998, has also been rumored in the last year to be working on a Web browser, a thin-client operating system, and a searchable digital archive of library and reference material, supposedly code-named Project Ocean.

To be sure, it's not a stretch to imagine Google's future. Just look at its past. In six years, the company has gone from a straightforward search engine to a Web portal extraordinaire, with an advertising network, comparison shopping service, e-mail and Web publishing products.

Perhaps half the fun in the conjecture is the detective work involved in tracking a highly secretive company.

Smith ran a string utility search on the binary files in the desktop application, found the protocol "googlemail://" and next to it "google_im://." He speculated that the Google e-mail protocol could eventually help the desktop application interact with the company's free Web-based search service, Gmail.

Web loggers at the Digital Life conference in New York were atwitter with the possibilities of a Google IM tool.

Google has incorporated Picasa's photo-sharing technology into its Blogger Web publishing service to help people publish photos to their blogs. But it has largely kept Picasa's IM technology under wraps.

"It's a good bet that as Google integrates Picasa better with the rest of its services, Hello will be its chat client, with full feature support for Gmail and Google Desktop. And if you are worried about security, Google claims that it's more secure than AOL Instant Messenger," said Nathan Weinberg, who runs the InsideGoogle blog.
